I inherited this old rifle from my grandpa a few years back, does anybody have any idea what it may be? I dont think I would ever shoot it but any guesses what caliber it may be? Doesn't have any writing on it that I can read other than a serial #

Hey bud. That's a Spanish Mauser M1916 short rifle. Originally chambered for 7x57 Mauser. During modernization towards the CETME rifle, they re-chambered many of those to 7.62x51 (NATO - NOT .308) for ammo compatibility. That's all I can tell you from side-on pictures.

I had a Spanish civil guard 1916 Mauser that had been re-barreled to 7.62 x 51 back in the 1950s.

It was a good shooter, but very hard kicking. (Had a tough steel butt plate.) 25 years ago when my national match M1A broke its operating rod in the middle of a high power rifle match, I started using that bolt action Spanish Mauser. Finished the match only down about 30 points from what I had been expecting if I had finished using the M1A and it never gave me trouble.
