I am in the process of a 308 build. I am wanting some advice for a scope to put on it. I am wanting to get into long range shooting. I have $800 put aside for scope and rings. Any help would be appreciated. Would like to buy local but if I have to I will order it. Thanks again

I have a few scopes but they cost far less than $800. I have a BSA i use for target shooting I got from Cheaper than dirt that I think would also be good up to 200 yards.. It cost only $60 . Go to their website the trader has a link to it they have lots of scopes and thier prices are good and if you order one fed-x will have it to you in days. Look at the predator quest webb site. He hunts coyotes at long range and uses and sells a couple of Simmons scopes that look good and sell for $230. I also like the Nikon models with the bullet drop compensator. These you can get from wallmart dot com. check these out.

http://swfa.com/, http://midwayusa.com, also http://opticsplanet.com has good prices but you might have to wait a couple of weeks to get it shipped out. http://www.snipercentral.com/ & http://www.snipershide.com/ have really good info on long range shooting and their forums would be a good place to get advice. Are you looking at just bench rest shooting or will you be hunting with it as well? I can tell you which brand I would avoid: Barska. Mine has totally frustrated me on my .308.
Edit: I'm not an expert but I have read good things about Pride and Fowler scopes and these 2 models are easily in your price range and get recommended a lot: http://swfa.com/Pride-Fowler-Rapid-Reticle-800-Rifle-Scopes-C3296.aspx

Your best value will likely be found in the Vortex Viper line. They make some really great scopes at affordable prices. I've had a couple of their target scopes that were over achievers at anywhere near their price point.

I can highly recommend these folks. You can call them, tell em' what you're looking for, and they'll work to find you a deal. It ain't easy for me to recommend Yankees, but these guys have been good folks to deal with.
