I just use acetone most of the time. If it's metal, I'll soak it for a minute then wipe off. If it's any sort of plastic, I very cautiously test it for effect. Some less durable plastics can "melt" apparently. Hasn't happened to me yet.
Doesn't look like you'll really be running into much plastic anyway.

Lacquer thinner is your safest bet. It will only remove the paint and nothing else. Any blued parts such as sights will remain as they should. Just be sure to remove grips and any plastics form gun or they will be damaged beyond repair. It will not
hurt any of the metal surfaces at all....

Acetone. Keep it away from plastics or fibre glass though. It will eat it. It will take off the paint though, if it is just paint. Then bead balst or scotch brite pad it (low buck way of doing it) Acetone will not remove blue, but will leach just about all the oil out of the gun and small related parts. I use it to de-grease screws and parts prior to cold blue touch up. Nothing works like it. Also depending if your frame is an AL alloy the muriatic acid may eat it. Be careful.

J realize I'm 2 days late, but I'm betting you still haven't done anything to it yet. I am suprised that nobody suggested MEK solvent. Since there have been so many different opinions, why don't you "google" them all. The thing I like about MEK (methylethylketone) is that there wont be any "soak" time, but you may not be as impatient as I am.

They also sell some stuff called MEK at any auto body paint store such as Sherwin Williams. It will take paint off paint or anything else. But where gloves it burns !!!!
