Actually it's very much republican if you are around upstate, the southerntier or over toward the adirondack region.
It's the cities, and mostly nyc that sway the voting because of the sheer number of people.
It was a good place to grow up, as long as you stay away from downtown of any major city.
I know plenty of people like myself that grew up there, but now would never move back.
If they split the state, and had nyc and the hudson valley area combined into one new state, voting would be very different than what you currently see.
