I'm putting my first upper together and am installing the gas rod. How far do you put the gas rod into the receiver? Does it matter? Thanks for the help guys!

Now that is funny!!!
The gas tube inserts into the gas block and is held in place by a roll pin. No offense intended, but if you don't know how the gas tube installs, why on earth are you attempting to assemble an upper?
I disassembled it and now am putting it back together. I just didn't know how far the gas tube goes into the receiver... I know how it attaches to the gas block
The depth into the receiver is automatically set when you attach the gas tube to the gas block, unless you're using the wrong length gas tube.
This, and this. These kinds of posts are pretty common place around here, as I recall the OP had a similar thread asking how to remove the barrel. While I applaud the OP's enthusiasm, I am concerned. If he didn't know how to remove the barrel or how to install a gas tube (or his nomenclature, "gas rod"), did he properly torque the barrel nut? Did he check the head space? If I had to guess he most likely did not. If he didn't he runs the risk of having a gun that won't be able to chamber a round properly, or worse blow up, or his barrel can come loose due to a lose barrel nut.

I didn't put a new barrel on the gun, I ended up just completely taking it apart and putting it back together. I torqued the barrel nut to the proper foot pounds as well
