Quick Question On Currently Airing College Bowl Game on ESPN

This is the Quick Lane Bowl between Bowling Green [7-5] and Minnesota [5-7]. I thought to be bowl-eligible a college team had to have a minimum of 6 wins during the season. Minnesota only has 5 wins. Did the rules change or were there no other decent teams to play ? Nothing against Minnesota, just curious. Thanks.

If there aren't enough 6 win teams to fill all the bowl spots, 5 win teams are allowed in and they go in order of academic score. This year there were 79 6 win teams and 82 bowl spots. Jacksonville State and James Madison were given 2 of the remaining 3 spots as teams transitioning to FBS, and Minnesota got the last spot with the highest academic score among the 5 win teams.

Thank you for the detailed info. Appreciate it.
