While we're on the whole refinishing discussion and doing a "show & tell" session, here is something I would never consider messing with.

I would re-finish it, re-blue it, cerakote it or something. I'm sorry, but I can't stand the look of excessive cosmetic abuse, sentimentality or not. Now if doing so affects the re-sale value then that's a different story, I may leave it as is; especially if the value is high. If not, go ahead and make her pretty again.

EDIT: I saw the re-finished photos and it looks great. You made the right decision.
