.38 hard cast will crack any bones and penetrate, which is the most you can expect from .38 Special.
The last time I came across a hog real close I was carrying a .44mag. What I learned that day was it's impossible to run fast enough in Crocs to catch a grown hog. I almost had it but it went up a steep bank and I was slipping all over the place trying to get up it at speed.

Crocs must not have been in sport mode
A 40 yard shot is a lot easier than a 20 yards shot. If you're really only going to be taking shots inside 30 yards you'd be better off with a dove gun. It'll reduce the chance of a miss. Shoot a turkey target with a 1 1/8oz of hard #7.5s like Winchester AA Super Sport. You'll see what I mean. Probably don't need to choke tighter than modified.
That’s exactly what I would shoot them with. I would unload on their head. I wouldn’t be concerned about a pistol.
Well you're used to the 38. Buffalo Bore ammo. If it was me, 44mag. But I'm used to it. There was also some good mentions. 10mm and 45Colt. Either would be good. That 45 would be the most pleasant to shoot. It would be close to your 38 in recoil. Unless you get some really hot ammo. I'd go with a double action revolver. Only thing is, they're few and far between at a premium price. Generally a collector's item.
I've patterned my gun at 20, 30, and 40. I am comfortable with my capabilities at close range. Plus I get the added bonus of my gun being capable at 40, which I wouldn't get with a dove gun. Plus, in my family with my uncle and cousins who are all avid turkey hunters, we like to say "it's personal with you and that bird."

I have a Smith 10-6 that the finish is all nasty and scratched up that I got for cheap because of that. I bought it as a woods/beater sidearm because I wouldn't mind so much if I put another ding in it. Not too much value to worry about ruining.
Yep, you don't want to just piss off a hog. You'll have a much better chance of hitting a charging hog right with the shotgun
