Red dots on pistols

Im not advocating someone not shoot them(lost in all the noise and emotions in here)hell I like them.I have a Trijicon on a Browning Buckmark.Just that people especially "new" shooters learn or "master"(wrong choice of words)irons first before settling on a RMR,because odds are they wont be buying a Trijicon like you and I or others here who are fanatics about anything firearms.More than likely they will buy a MR without the R,and if and when it breaks or goes down,on their carry piece....they will be up the creek without a paddle.The paddle being profecient use of irons.

I get your point truly, and yeah I think thats what its about getting a quality RDO on your carry piece, getting good at both id say master the red dot, over irons and be proficient with irons where your not going to be without a paddle. If you can only afford a venon or burris id say save up the money and wait I like the holosun but I wouldnt trust it with my life, the RMR is proven and has a amazing track record, but yes I believe being proficient with irons is a necessity especially if you do carry one of those lower end RD but as long as you can get hits on target quick, accurately do what you can afford to doI know a good RD is almost as much a glock some people would be like why buy that when i can have two glocks i get it

I don’t want to be confrontational here. Please break this down for me dummy style....

I think you meant to say master the basics with BUIS then master the RDO. This way if your RDO is not operable, you have the BUIS to rely on and your proficiency with them loosing you (shooter) the ability to engage and hit the target your intending to hit.

Am I right in your thinking?

No i meant be a true master of the red dot, like the name implies BUIS are backups I dont understand the notion where one translates to the other aside from getting hits on target irons are inherently more difficult to use you have to factor in a lot of variables, you dont have to with a red dot, I understand the need to be proficient with irons **** happens stuff breaks, batteries die, you could lose your zero, but if you buy quality youll get quality Im all for Irons but as a backup to my main sighting system, same as on a rifle do you run all your drills on irons before you switched over to a red dot most people dont even shoot with their buis on their rifle why because a red dot is infinitely so much easier to shoot with same principles apply

Sorry also there isn't mucj to master on iron sights aside from a proper consistent presentation from your holster, and focusing on your front sight, and keeping both eyes opens, all the real important stuff is what your doing with your hands grip, trigger control, being calm, and composed, not being shaky is what matters the most

Sir, I agree for the most part... those that are having a RDO added to a pistol (pick your flavor) may be doing it because it is the cool-guy thing to do. I have noticed (go to any range to see Fudd) and there’s not many folks that can hit a target they are intending to hit at 10-15 yards much less if they can, their grouping is fuk’d....

Those of us that are able to master fundamentals are able to move past the BUIS into an advanced sighting system...

I think all of us take for granted the fundamentals because we’re/ your already good at them. Don’t forget about the novice shooter/ that guy or gal that has a nightstand gun the shot one round out of to familiarize themselves with “recoil”... those that don’t get out but once a year for 20 minutes....

There is a difference...

This thread is about a RDO NEEDED on a self defense gun... is it needed? That’s the question.

The answer is absolutely not “needed”. Wanted, preferred - maybe but certainly not needed.
