Refinishing an old S&W 39-2

I don't want to refinish it to increase the value. I like pretty guns. This one is not pretty. And, yes, I know they are a tool and yada, yada, yada. I have Glocks for that purpose. I want it refinished for me. But, on the other hand, I don't want to invest $500 into a gun that will never be worth that much in case I ever have to sell it.

There's the rub. They aren't getting any cheaper. There's a lot to be said for a gun with character. Were it me, I'd invest in some spare mags and a good leather holster and a new set of springs and shoot the crap out of it. :)
If it was me, this is what I'd do. Mags for that pistol may not be very easy to find but they are a good investment if you get original factory mags. If you can't find factory mags go with Mec-Gar mags, they actually make a lot of the mags for Browning, Beretta and other gun makers. They may have even made the mags for those older Smiths.

S&W, ProMag and another I can't remember off the top of my head. To the best of my limited knowledge MecGar did not make magazines for the 39 series S&W's.

I've heard rumblings that the ProMags are actually decent. Perhaps there is a magazine that can actually copy and not screw up. ;)

I had some ProMags years ago but I don't remember what they were for, maybe for the Mini-14. They wouldn't hold as many rounds as advertised, jammed and wouldn't hold the bolt open when emptied. But their quality may have improved since then for all I know. That was a long time ago.

Nope. They are still crap. I bought some for a BDM because they were the only ones I could find, they didn't make it through three loadings before the springs crapped out.
