Daino is correct .That is probably a collection of the paintings (pictures and descriptions) from the biggest art museum in Russia.
Name of the book is "Paintings of the State Hermitage", published in 1959. Books that old are not allowed to be taken out of the country easily (I have a couple of family books from the 30s), so someone put effort in bringing it out of Russia.
Hermitage collection has grown since then.
Hermitage includes the Winter Palace (main czar residence) in St Petersburg and lesser palaces along the Neva river. You can easily spents months looking at the displayed collection of art. Last I heard, they have room to display only 20 percent of their stuff.
