S&W 36-1. Trigger does not cock hammer everytime (Problem gun #1)

I took my new to me (and no longer for trade cuz it aint workin) 36-1 to Wilson Shoals today. Sometimes it fired, sometimes I pulled the trigger and the hammer didn't move, while the trigger stuck as shown in the photo. I fiddled with the hammer and it fired a few rounds then ceased working again. ^#&*%! I have dry fired with snap caps without an issue prior to the range.

Any ideas why? Thanks in advance.

have you opened it up? it looks like it has been assembled incorrectly.
dont pull the trigger again until you have checked.
Does the hammer lock back when cocked? Does it always fire in single action?

Is the ejector rod loose? Are the chambers clean?
