S&W 9mm Revolver is Back!

I don't know why, well actually I do, but I have always liked these but never owned one because they were discontinued back in the late 90's (I believe) and the prices skyrocketed. I used to have a 642 airweight, but no longer do I own or shoot a .38 special. That said, I loved the size and feel of that gun. Now S&W has reintroduced this wheelgun in a pretty cool package featuring real sights including front night sight a fluted barrel and given the fact it's a 9mm, this one just may be on the short list! I think S&W have been selling the Model 986 on-and-off since about 2008.

At some points, only as a Performance Center model, but I think they've always had at least one 9mm wheelgun "in the game". But that one looks like a real beaut.

We have one at my shop. The fit and finish are really nice but I don’t totally understand the idea of a lower capacity, heavy, moon clip needing revolver.

No hammer is a deal breaker for me. Smith still has the 929 8 shot that takes moon clips

Internal hammer, that's what I like about this model. On a hunting or target revolver I do prefer an exposed hammer.

It's just different, I agree with all you said and would never choose to carry this daily as my EDC. However, 3 rounds of 124gr+P and a couple rounds of snake shot in a Fobus OWB paddle holster is a great option for me when hopping in and out of a Gator while checking deer stands before the season starts.

sure, but you could accomplish almost the same thing with a ~$300 revolver in 38 as well.

I tend to agree. IMO, there's no real upside, beyond 9mm ammo costing less than half of .38.
But even then, so what? Realistically, very few people are going to spend much time at the range wasting ammo through an Airweight snubbie ( and I say that as a longtime Airweight EDC'er!)

The fact that 9mm is available in a modern pistol makes this a dealbreaker.
