Saw a 4 door jeep wrangler with all the doors removed and two car seats in the back...

Who gives a ****? We each live life at our own risk (and that of our parents) regardless of the government's attempts to manage that risk.

Look at this way - as cruel as this sounds - think of it as Darwin's law in effect.

I consider myself something of a Jeep aficionado. I've built them, I've wheeled snot out of them, and more importantly I have bent, fabricated and welded more roll cages than most here would in a lifetime. I've seen them rolled, wrecked, and mangled. I'm also a relatively new parent (my son is 17 months old). I'm also a child of the 70's as has been pointed out above.

I have several reactions here:
1) Any parent in ANY Jeep with their kids with just the factory cage is living on borrowed time. They build them to MINIMUM safety standards. If you have $2K for that wheel and tire package, you have more than enough money to upgrage the factory cage.

2) Child safety seats: they're pretty damned secure, and as long as they are properly latched in, INSIDE the vehicle, they're really not a problem.

3) In my daily commute, I drive a Nissan Versa. Given the choice between having them strapped into a versa or a 4 door JK with or without the doors, I'm gonna pick the JK. Survivability: it's about mass.

4) I would be more concerned about something blowing in the door or up from the road (bug, rock, etc.) than I would a collision. Of equal concern here would be them having access to throw something OUT (toy, ball, shoes, etc.).

So would I ride with my child like this? Sure, depending on the trip. 75MPH on the freeway? Probably not. A scenic trip up to the mountains? Absofrikken-lutely.

Something nobody has brought up here: think about how many people would freak out about having children around guns. Do most of YOU plan to have your kids around guns? Yeah, this kind of uneducated hysteria/finger pointing is the same thing pointed at a different sport.

For comparison sake, THIS is how I've spent many a weekend, and with the proper precautions, it's perfectly safe for kids:

Wow, really? Who cares? They aren't your kids. You can parent your kids however you want. ****, wrap them up in bubble wrap and send them off to school if it makes you feel all warm and fuzzy. :tsk:

I could see it an issue had they been infants. I have been driving my boy around in my 2 door jeep since he was about 3, top off and all. He loves it.

Is it just me or is that a little over the top? No way in heck would I leave no barrier between my kids and another car, especially in Atlanta. I mean geeze, what if they get T Boned or one of the toddlers takes off his seatbelt? :tsk:
Apparently it's just you. ;)
In all fairness, I have an 11 year old and it seems like yesterday he was in a car seat. I can't say if I'd have given what you saw a second thought since I've seen fathers of the year with children barely above toddler age (legs too short to reach the pegs), riding their kids on motorcycles including interstates..... YOLO?

I would be more concerned with how certain people raise certain kids who grow up to be certain criminals like the fathers they never met.

then again, that would also be implying that a give a **** about people unknown to me or what they may do... which I dont.

I prefer to spend my life having fun and caring about me and my people. People can miss a lot in life concerning themselves about what other people should or should not be doing.

That top pic looks awfully like the rock garden at Crawfords Campground up by tellico! Yes??

I went out for lunch at mellow mushroom in vinings and saw a 4 door jeep wrangler with the doors removed and two car seats in the back. We sat outside so I saw when they left and the dad put two kids in them that looked to both be under 5 years of age.

Is it just me or is that a little over the top? No way in heck would I leave no barrier between my kids and another car, especially in Atlanta. I mean geeze, what if they get T Boned or one of the toddlers takes off his seatbelt? :tsk:
Oh dammit! I thought you were gonna say something about how completely retarded it looked. I think a 4 door Wrangler is an abomination. It's the Wrangler for the whipped husband who might as well have bought a Grand Cherokee.
As for the safety issue I have to say that it's the car seats and if they are correctly strapped in that will make the difference. I had a 92 Wrangler for a short time in 2010 and I rode my little girl around in the front with the half doors on it. I see no point in taking the half doors off. I like having a place to rest my left arm.
The thing that really fires me up is that lately I see more and more guys on crotch rockets with little kids hanging on to them for life. I don't own a bike so I don't criticize those who do. But when I see kids as young as 7 and 8 on a bike in thick traffic it pisses me off because that kid is NOT old enough to make that decision. Riding a motorcycle IS taking your life in your own hands no matter how careful you think you are. I don't think it's anywhere clos to right to make that decision for a child.
And on top of that, why is THAT legal and they want to screw with me about a seat belt?
