I will do my very best my friend. Drop by and harass the guys for me in my absence

Here's my two cents....

I know it's almost last minute.. but I am working on my SBR paperwork and I am still debating what to go with... I have a couple of questions... hopefully someone out there in ODT Land has some insight. There is so much information on the internet that I really don't know what to trust... I figured I'd trust ODT members over other forums... I've had great luck so far with gaining assistance from you guys!

I am going to do a 556 SBR and a 9mm SBR. I do plan to shoot them suppressed also.

Not sure if you got a suppressor yet, but I would stay away from direct threads; there's a lot of pressure in a 5.56 so I would stick with some type of quick detach can. Also, 5.56 can be pretty gassy. I personally would recommend the Gemtech suppressed bolt carrier. In my opinion, it reduces 75-80% of the gas in your face by blowing this out the ejection port; good stuff.

556 Questions:
  1. Is 11.5 inch really the ideal size barrel for 556? Or is there a better length? I have an LMT 10.5" upper; it's nasty! I run this gun hard and get better groups with this than I do with my 16" Colt. The theory stands though....longer the barrel...the higher the accuracy. I like my guns short or long. If I was going for accuracy beyond 300 meters, than yes go with a 20"+; I have no problem putting rounds on steel at 300 with my 10.5"
  2. What length gas tube would be most beneficial? Carbine length is fine. Keep in mind though that when you suppress any gun, you're going to have issues that you'll just have to play around with to get it to operate smoothly; usually a heavy buffer will do the trick as you need to slow down that BCG from the increased velocity from the increase in pressure or blow back from running a suppressor. There are a lot of things you can do, but the Gemtech suppressed bolt carrier is the best I've seen. Ever since I bought one of these I have not had any other issues; and I run my rifle hard. On another note, if you ever decide to run something a little shorter, a 7" for example, you are left with a much shorter gas tube which will cause you problems. If you ever decide to go that short, check out Phase 5's pigtail gas tube.

9mm Questions:
  1. Will there be very much difference in effectiveness between a 7inch barrel to a 10in barrel? I know there will be a difference in velocity and in drop but if you have one please let me know what you have encountered. With 9mm, you're fine anyway you go. 5.56 is where you have the most problems. I'm assuming you're doing an AR 9mm build? Have you considered another type like the Scorpion EVO SBR or something else? I built an SBR out of a POF MP5 and it rocks! I can even use the three lug quick detach adapter on my suppressor. No gas in the face and runs flawlessly! I would stay away from Sig's MPX; too many parts and very very gassy when run suppressed.
  2. What is the best conversion block to use? I have seen better reviews about the ones that are inserted from the top. No experience with conversion blocks.

Overall Questions:
  1. Posts EVERYWHERE are saying conflicting statements about the measurement... do I measure with the stock fully extended or fully shortened? They are not measurement Nazis, so use your best judgment. Also consider that in order to properly measure means that the gun has to be assembled prior to registration which is a violation of NFA laws ;) With that said, they want to know the overall length at it's shortest length, so use the measurements when the stock is fully collapsed. If you're really worried about the exact measurements, you can take a dow rod that fits into your barrel and measure the barrel from muzzle (w/o flash hider/adapter/whatever) to breach and then measure overall length. If it differs than what's on your stamp, you can send the ATF a letter to bring your paper work to exact specs.
  2. Who would you recommend to engrave the lower? If you are building/registering on a Form 1 than yes, you have to engrave the lower to be in compliance. You'll need your name/trust/corporation ect. and city and state. Bryan is a great guy and a wealth of knowledge. I would absolutely recommend Dobbs Defense to do your engraving Nonliberal Nonliberal .
PM me if you have any further questions and good luck!! Suppressed SBR's are a ton of fun!

Thanks for the help!
Michael
