School Me on Airsoft

X2 on atlanta airsoft.
Wherever you buy, make sure they do repairs. Airoft gear breaks down alot....even my son's top-end competition loadout needs monthly maintenance, wires/connectors burn out, etc

I used to have an ICS MP5 that shot at just under 600 fps. ICS and Tokyo Marui are great brands to start your son off with. It was metal and felt like my old HK. Make sure wear good eye pro because some folks have upgraded airsoft rifles that shoot 700 fps. Usually there are ground rules laid out about folks shooting those at folks or at least distance restrictions. I would avoid gas guns since they act up during cold weather when fall and winter arrive. Airsplat.com is a good site to start.

airsoft Atlanta has their store in Norcross off Peachtree Industrial and the guys that work there are very friendly and very knowledgable... Check them out

OK, I can give you all the info on airsoft you want. My kids have been into it for 5 or 6 years, and we have a decent arsenal, 8 or 9 M4 variants, 3 snipers (2 Rem 700 clones) a couple MP5's Mac11, and a number of gas pistols. I'v been repairing them for a while when they malfunction, it's cheaper than taking them to a shop.
Airsoft Atlanta is about the only decent shop in town since On Target closed. Stay away from that hole in the wall at Discover mills, it's one of the worst arenas in town. There are others, one outdoor and a few indoor.
GET A DECENT GUN, and you can improve it with upgrades as needed. Get one with a full metal gearbox, and metal (body) upper/lower receiver. I haven't looked at the latest brands lately, my personal gun is a KWA SR7, my older son has an ICS M4, but my younger son's not into it. I've been buying busted trashed guns for very little cash and repairing/rebuilding them.
Right now, there are 2 main schools of airsoft guns, AEG and GBB/Polar Star. AEG are the electric ones and the GBB are Gas Blow Back. Both look realistic, but the GBB guns function almost the same as the real thing, but are nearly as expensive as a real steel.
Your son needs to decide on the style, either M4/M16, AK, H&K...
ICS and Tokyo Marui are great brands, but they are also the more expensive ones. KWA is also one of the top names, and is a very well made gun. Echo 1, Classic Army, JG, G&G (IMHO) are middle of the road guns with a shorter life expectancy that a KWA or ICS. HOWEVER... brands like ICS, Tokyo Marui and KWA also use proprietary parts that are not interchangeable. The middle of the road versions tend to mirror the Tokyo Marui specs. KWA, also uses proprietary parts, but can use some off the shelf parts. The advantages in the top brands, is the parts that tend to fail in other brands are stronger and will last longer.
Batteries are another HUGE issue, voltage, amperage and even chemistry plays a role in that to get. NiMH 9.6v 1600 mAh are the most common. 11.1v 1500mAh LiPo batteries are more powerful, but can and will harm most (middle of the road) guns. And the charges for these 2 types are NOT compatible.

havent done it in years myself

the gas blowback pistols are cool, they use co2 or this other stuff (i think we called it green gas).

those are fun because they are the closest you will get to mimicking a real gun. the aegs are more like toy rc cars and are fun

i quit a long time ago when i could buy real guns though

I work at Georgia Paintball in Kennesaw on the weekends and we carry a full line of airsoft guns and gear. PM me and I would be glad to help you out.

don't get a pistol they are worthless. JG is an excellent entry level gun. do not waste money on gas blow back, co2 or anything else. if your kid wants to have a good time and have the same stuff everyone else has, go electric. AR, AK, P90, MP5, whatever he likes although AR's are the cheapest and have the most stuff for them. I have 3 JG's and would buy them again. Stuff made in china shoots faster than stuff made in japan. I.E., a jg will shoot 400fps out of the box but a Tokyo marui will shoot 320 out of the box for twice the price. There is a law in japan that says airsoft guns are limited to 1 joule of energy, hence the speed restriction. Chinese guns are all TM clones anyway, but will shoot faster since they don't have this law. Some people say Japanese stuff is more reliable and better quality, maybe this is true. But you will spend a lot more money on upgrades for a TM to get it to shoot 400fps than you will ever spend on replacement parts for your Chinese clone before your kid wants a new one anyway.
