So in the coming weeks I might be visiting some family down in Mexico. They live in Mexico City, D.F. Not a terribly dangerous place but, its not terribly safe and I'm designing my edc for it. So far its: inexpensive gshock, leatherman wave, and streamlight. (Ignoring documents, phone, etc.)
I want to include an ifak. I want something small that I don't have yo carry in a backpack that someone might rob me of. That is, if I get stabbed and my backpack stolen, I still want to have the bloody ifak. I've seen a couple of 'pocket' ones but, they all cost about $100 and include a tq, gloves, and a quickclot. Whereas the one that includes the npa tube, decomp needle, and some other stuff is $120 from ITS Tactical. Why is the one with less stuff not that much less? Should I just buy the more equipped kit, keep the essentials in my pocket and the rest in my backpack? And... what do I really need in an ifak. Anything I know I've learned from RECOIL.

Do not make it look like an IFAK (ie; Tacticool), or a wallet, or anything otherwise valuable. Because if you get robbed, they will take that too.

It should be as light and compact as possible. Something like the vynl pockets cut out of a travel shaving kit or the like, tri-folded over and over into a wallet sized bundle that you can keep in a cargo pocket or on a belt loop. Mainly you just need something to control immediate bleeding, a TQ, a field dressing, all the other stuff is neato but almost impossible to apply to yourself. The IFAK is so others can use it on you.

When you get there walk into a drug store and buy a pack of single edge razor blades and a razor. Then you will be better protected.

For your circumstances, I'd just go with a small Tourniquet (check out the RATS Tq) quick clot and a pressure bandage.

NPAs and Decomp Needles are buddy-aid tools, not self-aid.

Lol, I wish. It's just a lot easier for me to travel down there.

if your travel plans include research and friggin IFAK... its not "Easier"

And if you are going to get robbed in mexico, you will lose anything and everything.
Seriously do not wear nice cargos... the ambulance ride might be a tad more awkward if you run commando
