Having been to quite a few of the distilleries in Scotland myself, I can say that the high end blended Scotch whiskys are every bit as complex as single malts, if not more so.
Yes, some blended Scotch is not that good, as it is the dregs of crappy single malts. But the high end stuff from Johnny Walker and Chivas brands are the best of their single malts blended into a signature creation.
As sparked pointed out, each has their place and each one brings something different from the table. Like a silky-smooth finish with a hint of vanilla and cloves? Try a good single malt Speyside. Want a heavy, smokey, whisky with a strong alcohol burn? A top notch single-malt Islay is what you are looking for. Want a bit of smoked vanilla that has an almost cinnamon-y after taste? You need a good blend for that.

I like both blends and single malts. Johnny blue is a good scotch. I like glenmorangie. Glenlivet, macallen.
Just back from Inverness Scotland 2 weeks ago (lots of great distilleries with site tasting if you have a driver)

I love scotch, but I guess I dont make enough money to REALLY love scotch. Too many other expensive hobbies. You have to spend at least $60 to even approach getting anything good. I can rarely justify it. I keep a bottle (right now it's Glenmorangie 12 Quinta Ruban), but only get it out every once in a while. I like my $26 Bulleit rye just about as much as anything else. Maybe when I'm older I will get into scotches more?
