Scotch Drinkers

Having been to quite a few of the distilleries in Scotland myself, I can say that the high end blended Scotch whiskys are every bit as complex as single malts, if not more so.

Yes, some blended Scotch is not that good, as it is the dregs of crappy single malts. But the high end stuff from Johnny Walker and Chivas brands are the best of their single malts blended into a signature creation.

As sparked pointed out, each has their place and each one brings something different from the table. Like a silky-smooth finish with a hint of vanilla and cloves? Try a good single malt Speyside. Want a heavy, smokey, whisky with a strong alcohol burn? A top notch single-malt Islay is what you are looking for. Want a bit of smoked vanilla that has an almost cinnamon-y after taste? You need a good blend for that.

don't be a blended apologist. blended is best used with Diet Coke..........or trash can punch with the college crowd.
Johnny Walker is a blended scotch. All of their labels are bar whisky at best. Avoid all blended scotches. The distillery adds grain alcohol to get them up to proof. You need to drink a good single malt like 15 yr. Balvenie, 12 yr. Glenmorangie, Port Wood Finish or 16 yr Lagavulin.

Son of Tavish me thinks you have some fine recommendations for a neat drink in a heavy glass.

It doesn't get any better than this.

I love scotch, but I guess I dont make enough money to REALLY love scotch. Too many other expensive hobbies. You have to spend at least $60 to even approach getting anything good. I can rarely justify it. I keep a bottle (right now it's Glenmorangie 12 Quinta Ruban), but only get it out every once in a while. I like my $26 Bulleit rye just about as much as anything else. Maybe when I'm older I will get into scotches more?
