shipping handguns in georgia

Good link. However, last I heard those private contract carriers (UPS, Fed Ex) won't allow handguns to be shipped by ground at a reasonable price. If you're an individual sending it off, it has to go "next day air" and that's very expensive (but safer; the gun is less likely to be stolen). FFL dealers can ship handguns via regular ground service on the cheap.

An FFL does not have to do a "transfer" to ship a gun for you. If you have a friendly FFL, you can prepare the short gun for shipping, pick up the necessary paperwork from the FFL and mail it through the USPS. I'll repeat, it is not a TRANFER, the gun doesn't have to go on his books if all you are doing is shipping it. At least my local FFL will do this as a service (I of course pay the postage).

May a nonlicensee ship a firearm through the U.S. Postal Service?
A nonlicensee may not transfer a firearm to a non-licensed resident of another State. A nonlicensee may mail a shotgun or rifle to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. The Postal Service recommends that long guns be sent by registered mail and that no marking of any kind which would indicate the nature of the contents be placed on the outside of any parcel containing firearms. Handguns are not mailable. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun.
