There is a chance that I can get the shotgun that my grandpa use to hunt ducks with from back when I was a kid. I have the single shot I used, but my aunt took my grandpas when he passed even though it was supposed to go to me. Well she's passed and her husband passed & the daughter has said she's willing to ship it to me. Catch is she's in Sacramento, CA and I'm here in GA.
I thought an individual could ship a rifle or shot gun interstate to a FFL based on the ATF Q&A here: May a nonlicensee ship a firearm through the U.S. Postal Service?
Then I looked at who or how she could ship and found UPS & FedEx appear to be the only ones that ship shotguns or rifles any more BUT it appears they now require the shipper to be a FFL too. https://www.ups.com/us/en/support/s...are-regulated-items/prohibited-items/firearms & https://www.fedex.com/en-us/shipping/how-to-ship-firearms.html Looks like USPS is the only option but the rules are pretty long https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c4_009.htm
The problem I see here is that the person who will be mailing me the shotgun is NOT gun literate so packing, shipping where USPS requires her to open and prove it is unloaded, and the such is likely to be overwhelming. With that in mind I'm thinking the best bet is to do the leg work to find a FFL near her in CA that is willing to pack and ship the shotgun to my FFL here in GA.
Has anyone dealt with this kind of thing from CA? I want to make it as simple as possible so I get my grandpa's shotgun back, it is one of the only sentimental things in my life so I don't want to screw this up or scare her off from following thru. Any suggestions or experience would be greatly appreciated.
