SHTF Knife

Well, I carry a Gerber multi-tool everyday everywhere I go. In my pack in the vehicle I keep an inexpensive blade w/paracord wrapped handle. One other thing I keep is an old swiss military shovel. Short wood handle, sharpened on two sides. Can use as an axe, shovel, defense weapon, throwing weapon, hammer, etc. I picked it up at knob creek about ten years ago for $15. Great utility tool.
I do have a K-bar knife as well and several different kinds of swiss style knives strewn about in several different bags.

I like the simplicity and price point of the knife. Something that size that could be lashed to a rod as a spear would be nice. That and my Swiss Champ have my blade tool needs wrapped up. I think a pack shovel, 10-in-1 screwdriver, and some channel locks round out the tool needs.

I've been carrying the same original Leatherman for about 18 years. It's inferior to a lot of the newer designs, but the quality is excellent, sharp blade, tough construction, and it's solved many problems for me. I'd be hard pressed to set it down in favor of anything else. With that and a small camp axe, I'd be good to go.

No replacement for a quality machete in my mind. They are extremely versatile. But it must be a quality machete. I have a Collins Legitimus machete that was my grandfathers that he for 30 or 40 years before I got it, and I plan to give it to my grandson in a few decades.

Add a decent folding knife for the little chores and you are set
