I'm thinking about 2 knives. The Cold Steel Bushman with the hollow handle, especially for attaching to a pole to make an awesome spear.

The other is the Cold Steel machete. This video shows part one of 3(or 4) where this guy sets out to destroy this machete. It takes a huge amout of abuse. The one in the video is the Kukri, but I'm buying the Bowie machete. I think, they should be comparable in quality, both being from Cold Steel. I just prefer the bowie style.

I was looking at a hatchet/knife combo but the machete seems to be more versatile than a hatchet and pretty much better in all ways. Now I'm looking into a survival saw to compliment them.

Cold Steel makes a nice product. I have a Cold Steel kukuri (which I used quite heavily before I was given the Becker). Really cannot go wrong with either style!

Seriously! You could make a metal rod with a mount for the bayonet (looks something like the end of a gun barrel) and throw it into your pack. If needed you could lash the bayonet mount to a stick and make one hell of a spear. Then, the bayonet could be removed quickly and used as a knife. Also, bayonets are generally tough as they come. I agree with Okuma Steve...the bayonet is my survival knife of choice.
