Maybe think about hiring a campervan to see NZ, really good way of doing it, and NZ is compact enough that 7 days doing that is plenty.
Have you thought about going to Bali while you’re over that way? I prefer Bali over Thailand, more chilled and the food is way better. If your mate is in WA or NT in Australia, it’s only a three hour flight from that side.

My boy does Muay Thai, trained in a few places when we went to Thailand. The best was Chuwattana in Bangkok. Old gym in the run down part of China town Bangkok, getting there is like stepping into Big Trouble in little China. Kitchen and sleeping pads to the side of the ring for the local fighters. Some of the nicest people you’ve ever met.

I don’t like Bali much anymore. The good thing is everyone working in the tourist areas speak English. It’s a weird, artificial environment. Thousands of Westerners went there on tourist visas and never left. They know 5 words of Indonesian and they consider themselves locals. It’s obnoxious. Otherwise, it’s crowded and relatively expensive. Too many Russians who always bring organized crime, but they don’t have a monopoly on it. Just my perspective.
