I know I am preaching to the choir here, but train your kid's how to use your firearms, they should not be a mystery item kept in the house. All of my kid's know how to shoot them and where they are just in case of emergencies like this story. I took the mystery out of the guns in the house by letting the kids learn how to use them and allowing them, under supervision, to shoot pretty much anytime they want. No need to sneak a peak while dad or mom is not home.
