What is your opinion of a scope being mounted there? I’m new to SKS.

i wouldnt do it. You cannot field strip rifle properly without removing scope, so you are having to re-zero every time you go to shoot. Widening rear sight notch seems to work really well or using: http://westrifle.com/wrstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=15&products_id=414
in conjunction with posp or side mount is best
