I go for double lung shots unless a doe is real close, then maybe a neck shot. i never go through shoulder as it ruins to much meat and thats what I shoot them for....FOOD.

Right behind the shoulder, lower third does the trick. They'll run about 10 or 20 yards and then die. For my mediocre shooting ability, this is the most humane kill.

I usually take a heart or lung shot at distance. Some have dropped in their tracks, some ran 1/4 mile. If they are close to me and the rack isn't a factor, I take a head shot. They dont run far then.

Lung shot, I like making stew out of the neck meat. But I have shot a doe once in the head with a shotgun slug. Walked right under the stand and couldn't see half the body. She fell straight down. The dnr guy checked out the deer at the wma station and had the craziest look on his face it easy to take a jaw bone out if half the head is missing.

It is really thick where I hunt (chain saw briars and ya can't walk through em) so 300 win mag and take out the shoulders.
