So who all rides motorcycles?????

That time of the year again. Binging on YouTube videos from EICMA. Lots of new bikes I want but don’t have the extra toy money or space. Used bikes aren’t selling well even at discounted prices. Hopefully by March when the larger than expected income tax refunds come in people will be more motivated to buy and that will free up some space. Honda has a great looking new crossover called the CB1000GT. Can’t wait to throw a leg over it. If it fits I’ll get rid of my 2023 Versys 1000 SE LT which is about 100 lbs heavier and try one of those for a while. .

My dad was killed on his Harley road king 10 years ago. He was doing about 65mph and actually t-boned another motorcycle that pulled out in front of him. We grew up a motorcycle family, he and my mom went to Sturgis and Daytona several times. Eventually we took a family trip to Sturgis, I got to see the Full Throttle Saloon at 16 years old, every young man's dream :) When I was younger, he used to let me take his Harley up and down the road without my permit. In his older age, he joined the American Legion post, it was a specific motorcycle club and he loved to serve in that capacity. Heck, I always thought that one day he'd send me a picture of a big ol' buck draped over his backseat, that's how die-hard he was.

That said, there are many times I think about getting a motorcycle, but my demons come out and I think of my dad. Also, with the amount of traffic around here, I just don't think it's safe.

It has never been safe. You always have to watch out for everyone else. You can't afford to make a mistake. Sorry about your Dad

I’ve been down twice so far in life. I hit a dog at slow speed, and an oil slick got me on the entrance ramp of 75 it looked like an oil drum exploded. Highways seem to be wild for me. I’ve hit a deer body on 90 headed to sturgis, hit a possum body, ran completely over an armadillo, a 2x4 on 85, a piece of metal sent me into the side wall of 75 in Macon and I kept it up through all of these. It happens to all of us. I’d like to clarify that the only two things out of that list that were stationary were the deer body and the armadillo body everything else got kicked up into me.

Oh yeah and I got hit by a giant piece of a semi truck tire in El Paso Texas that got kicked up by a square body Chevy

A wonder you didn't die..........
That was nothing short of a miracle. I wasn’t wearing a helmet and it went straight into my front end it was about 2.5 feet long. I was riding a 2000 superglide and it hit the front end on the tubes and headlight then worked its way down and the tire pinned it to the road and I went over it. It happened in less than 2 seconds. Truck was in front of me on the right side on I-10. I rode home after that. I don’t even remember where I was trying to go. I wear a helmet all the time now. That was out in El Paso and Texas doesn’t have a helmet law.

my dad had an orange DT250 when i was growing up. I bought an XT250 to ride with him when I was 15. I"ve looked around for an orange DT250 ...

My first street legal bike was a Yamaha DT 250 --which I didn't actually enjoy riding on US and State highways. It felt like it was too small and didn't belong on those roads where the speed limit was 45 to 55 . But it was great putt-putt-ing around quiet neighborhoods or farm roads out in cow country at 35 mph.

I paid for the insurance and a license plate and tag on that bike for one year ---probably put 300 miles on it.
Used it to graduate from a learners permit to a full unrestricted Class "M" motorcycle license.

I'd love to find one again that I could get on for just a short ride to see what it feels like after not being on one for 30 years!!

This…New Orleans..setting at a light getting ready to make a left turn to get on the freeway. 3 lanes of traffic both sides. I was two cars back from the light. Light changed everyone took off made a left to get on the ramp, bumped it up to second and rolled on the throttle. Rear slid around 180 degrees and down I went. Slid across three lanes of traffic before stopping on the side of the road. Damn pea gravel pavement and oil don’t mix. Wore a hole in the primary cover and left boot. All primary oil drained out. Three hours later, tube of JBWeld and some primary oil and I’m headed back to Georgia.
The kicker to all this was I had just dropped off my wife at the NO airport so she could fly home. We had rode from San Antonio to New Orleans in a rain storm 90 % of the way and she was miserable.
Had she been on with me when I went down she would have probably been hurt…
