Parts will be different colors due to heat treating and metallurgy unless you do manganese.....its seems to be pretty uniform, but then black is black right
 
I was going to try the magnesium dioxide, from what I've read that puts out a nice black. I have my used motor oil bucket I'm thinking about rubbing with, that stuffs midnight black.
 
I used to hate wood then sold all the plastic guns and wound up with wood on everything. Waiting for oldsouth to get production going so i can put some new beech on my aussie and walnut on the brit.

-troy, dipping in used oil isnt a permenant colorant. The lubrication itself will darken however
