Spray Painting?

I have a Mossberg Maverick 88 with a decent camo paintjob on it, from the previous owner.

However, it looks like it's been taken on a dozen too many hunting trips, and all the paint is peeling back to reveal scraped metal underneath. Now, I want to paint the firearm a simple black, but I don't have the money to purchase that Duracoat stuff I've heard is so good.

Can I use simple spray paint?

sand it lightly with a scotch brite
wipe it off with a clean rag
spray it
let dry for 1 hour
good to go

I have no problem with the Maverick 88, bought 2 as Christmas gifts for my sons. I love them no failures easy to clean since Dec. probably put 1500 rounds through each of them target shooting and clay shooting. Easy for teen age boys to learn with and fairly durable.

I love mine. Never a problem and I aint out much money, and it 100% does the job of sitting by my bedside and helping to protect my house. One of the only guns I own that I would have to be super hard up to get rid of it.
