I believe that you need to re-open the thread first. Then you can delete the photos and close it again.
Weird, when I go to attachments under settings there is a checkbox next to each one.....then a delete button at the bottom.

Yours seems to be missing that feature, maybe someone altered your account and set it to the headache function instead of easy mode.

It's been an issue for a while and just comes down to being a bug in our software. Currently the plan is to move to new software within the next month and most of these types of issues should go away.
