Tell me about St Simons Island

Want to take the bride on a weekend getaway and have never been to SSI. We usually do st augustine, mexico bch or fernandina/amelia. Any folks have suggestions about SSI? What areas are better than others to stay in/eat/etc. Would like to be close to beach(walk or bicycle distance) while also being near some of the good dining establishments we could bike/walk to? Not 100% decided on SSI so maybe Jekyll. Just seeing what ODT recommends or has to say.
Thanks!

We have a place at SSI that we love. I will warn you the county is redoing the bathrooms at the main beach and are planning to redo the parking lot too so it may look messy. This time of year the beach is quiet and great to relax. Lots of people bring their dogs to walk on the beach. One dude used to bring a pet pig. The beach can be very wide at low tide which is a bother when walking from the car. There are plenty of places to eat -- our favorite is Southern Soul BBQ near the island airport. Lunch special is a deal and they have unique specials every day. There are several nice restaurants on the island -- Iguana's is good. Fiddler's is a treat but crowded and requires a reservation. If you bring a sportscoat you can eat at the Cloister -- but only if you need to impress someone. DO NOT GO to SSI the weekend of UGA vs Florida. SSI is where all the drunk GA college kids stay

Try St Simons Lighthouse Inn it is behind the light house close to the village and Neptune park. There are several restaurants within walking distance. We are on the island now and about to go walk the dog on the beach

I went to Saint Simons once and Jekyll twice they're nice enough but don't plan on going into the water --the water at the beach is ugly and smelly.

Felt to much like home? Lol.

To the O.P.

If it's just a night or two, I suggest Queens Court, which is in the Village, where some good food and views are.

If you like spending time outdoors, then Fort Fredrica and Cannon's Point preserve are nice.

Red fern Village is good for shopping and Christ Church offers tours.

For food:

I like Barba Jeans and either of the Crab Trap/Daddy's.

For Breakfast and lunch with an early dessert, I like Sweet Mama's.

Another good lunch spot is Hot Dog Alley, if you like New York style dogs.

Off island I recommend Willie Weanie Wagon for lunch.

Beach at low tide earlier this year:

Lots of folks are kinda put off by the muddy looking water down there. The corpse of engineers is constantly dredging the path going right between Driftwood Beach on Jekyll and the Pier Village beach on SSI so the cargo ships can have a clear path to the port. So the nasty stuff from the bottom is always stirred up.
One of my regrets is not ever getting to go to Cumberland Island when we lived down there. It's a beautiful island with tons of history and one of my wife's all time favorite places. You have to take a ferry over to it that leaves out of St Mary's. Another little town I really dig.
