The better Mopar street Engine

Yep. My recommendation in OP's choices would be the 440. The 426 is a straight up race engine. Great for track, but not around town. However I'd change one thing, I'd go with a single 4 barrel carb for just the reasons 41 said
I cut my teeth on tuning a dual quad on a tunnel ram. After you do it for a while it just becomes second nature.

Those mid-late '60's and early '70's Chrysler products were the fastest top-end cars I ever rode in.
Even some of the 4 barrel 383's with the automatic transmission would touch 150.
The Mopar 383 was one of the best engines it's ever been produced. Those things would live at 5,500 RPMs till the end of time. When you started modifying them with camshafts and stuff like that those engines just came to life. Especially with a nice gear change. Just something about that engine made it run like a scalded dog.

Torque is what gets you there. HP is what keeps you there. 40 ft..lbs of usable torque down low is hard to overcome light to light. Hemi had to be in full track set up to even be a contender. For the quarter mile the Hemi is the way to go. On the street where the engine spends most of it time in the lower RPM range the 440 would pull it like a wagon. Top HP numbers don't even enter in to the equation. However, if you like the Hemi you like the Hemi can't argue with that!
Oh I like the idea of a 426. But after running around with a full blown race engine around town for the last 12+ yrs has taught me better

My distributor crapped out on my old 67 Plymouth belvedere. I put an Excel dual point distributor in it. I had the usual bolt on modifications but that car had a ghost in I outran everything that went up against me. I couldn't tell you how many six-packs of beer I won racing that car on the weekends.
Good on you. I was glad to see HEI when it came around.....

Interesting, that would explain why they were so popular. I thought it was because people were too cheap to go for the 440
