The family vultures (updated picture)

It's been a while but anyone remember the trend where folks would point green "laser" pointers or such at roosting vultures and they would take off immediately? Seemed to frighten the heck out of them.

I haven't heard about that in a long time so it may not have really worked. But some of the videos of it were pretty cool.

We've had a family of red shouldered hawks on our property for years. Most years they have two young ones survive. The mom always brought them to sit on our deck as an "introduction" once they learned how to fly.

When our daughter was about 4 or 5 she came running into my workshop early one spring to tell me she'd seen the hawks, and they were "playing leapfrog".

"Leap frog?" I asked.

Those big innocent blue eyes lit up and she nodded her head and pointed outside, "one was standing behind the other on the same branch and they were jumping up and down."

Her first lesson in the birds (and bees). I just told her they were "making babies". She was so thrilled. How many people get to ever see raptors mating?

The hawks, and/or their progeny are still here. Still playing leapfrog every spring.
