This article about the shortage of USAF pilots makes no sense at all

That was back in '91, long time ago. Today at over 20K AGL where they operate over A-stan, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, etc. there is nothing that can reach them. There is more threat from a mechanical or landing/takeoffs from the airbase.

Not really. This was during the Gulf War. F-16, weapon system and training hasn't changed that much. Had incentive rides in an F-4, F-16 and F-15 during my career in aircraft maintenance. Fighters are extremely intense and physically grueling. Sounds easy til someone starts shooting at you.

It's always like that, everyone is a WOULD be HERO until the bullets start flying!!!

The army doesn't have fixed wing aircraft either. Two totally different animals.
With a little over 2000 hours of pilot in command time in several different Army fixed wing aircraft I am here to tell you, you have been misinformed. The Army has been continuously flying fixed wing aircraft from the days of the Wright Brothers until present.

Y'all are correct. I was thinking of combat and heavy lift.

My son wants to be a helicopter pilot
And had talked to the army recruiters who were Impressed with his asvab scores but he got offered a good college lacrosse scholarship
So he's doing that first

The army doesn't require a college degree for pilots
