I'm looking for a compact or small concealed carry 9mm for $350 or less. My husband wants me to get one, and this will be my first gun. I want something without a long trigger pull, and that my hand and pinky doesn't hang below the handle. Low recoil would be nice too.

I see you are not to far from the Live Fire range in Kingston.
Go see Jon and shoot several to see what fits you best and meets your criteria.
He keeps plenty of rentals, new pistols and used. Ammo is cheap there as well.
Great guy and he will assist you on the indoor range if you like.

Just remember to dress warm because his ventilation system keeps it a little chilly if it's cold out.

I'll second that on Live Fire and Jon !!!!! Great place and great guy for sure. Been going there since he first opened, does all my transfers, and will give you a straight answer. Also helps it's only about 2 miles up the road.

"low recoil" and " small and compact" will probably not amount to much stopping power. Many have been killed by .22 long-rifle which is "low recoil", but it's ability to "stop" a crazed perpetrator is dubious.

Somehow, a lightweight steam roller doesn't get the job done which in self defense, is "stopping the attack". Most will be deterred by simply seeing a weapon in you hand. Some will not.

A 38spl small frame revolver such as a S&W 36 or even a good "charter arms" type clone would suffice. Get some professional training regardless.

Second on the shield,9mm, my daughter went to the range and found the shield was the one she loved, I would suggest the one with the manual safety if you plan to carry in your purse. JHW has one on here and he's in Rome

All great suggestions. There are so many good concealed carry weapons available thats its almost impossible to keep up. Take an afternoon, gone to the Gun Shop/Range and see what feels good. Then shoot it, A LOT. Smaller calibers have less effect but can be effective if the round is placed in a vital spot. My Wife trained and carried a 1911,45ACP. She now carries a Bersa Thunder 380ACP. The 380ACP has come a long way in becoming a better defensive caliber. The 9MM is an excellent choice as well. Hornady offers a 9MM low recoil self defense round. There are other calibers that offer reduced recoil but the 380 and 9mm are by far the most popular and cost effective. The weapon choice is yours take some time and get what fits you. This may sound funny but you need to treat it like your best friend, after all it may save you some day.
