The rocks are stage 1 of a water filter. Also needed would be sand and charcoal crushed up from a fire
I figured you were just getting a pump before you hit the trail!
Rocks trap the big stuff, sand traps the small stuff, charcoal catches the stuff that doesn't taste right... still need to boil it or treat it.
My two packs aren't nearly so "concealable"... one is a typical external frame big blue backpack and the other is a camo GI external frame ruck. Funny thing is the polymer external frame feels heavier than the big blue pack with the aluminum frame.

I knew it was for water... Do you have the sand and charcoal in the bottom of that bucket, or is that a seperate filter.
