Ticket for 171mph

Without all the details, I was once clocked (by appointment) at a crazy ridiculous speed in my hot rod. The details notwithstanding, the local sheriff who clocked me basically said that if I hit a child at that speed and killed 'em I'd "be in trouble", but if I hit a cow and deprived a man of his livelihood, I'd "go to jail". Also I was only 17 and although I'd welded a roll cage in my car, I was still too young and stupid to be going so fast. I can testify that a 2nd generation camaro gets REAL light on the front tires over 117mph.

This was a local sherif who asked me to speed on my way to work on Sundays. He'd then come in to where I worked and tell me how fast I was going. I spent a week of spring break working the car over. New cam, heads, intake, bigger 4bbl, whale tail rear deck lid, BIG front air dam, lower rear end gear (2.56) and light truck tires that were 31" in diameter (yep, they rubbed). Then on Sunday I went speeding by the normal route and the big blue light came out to chase me. I did almost really crap my pants! I thought it wasn't the same sherif!!!! Took a looooong time to slow down but it was the top dog himself.

He wasn't pleased that I was going faster than his retired state trooper "interceptor" could go. Like I said, he warned me against doing it again and killing any farm animals. I got a lot of nods and waves from all the local polizie after that. But it was plain dumb.

I wasn't quite at 160 though. Took a long while to get to that speed.

The way it was described in the article and the recorded speed falling off on the radar as the cops clocked him, it sounds like he saw the cops, knew he was busted, and just went ahead and pulled on over.

Last time I got pulled for speeding was in a new Roush Ford pickup.
I got on it leaving a light to see what it would do (on the 85N access rd one way with no side street traffic so no one can pull out in front of you) topped a little rise at 80+ in a 45 zone and saw the motorcycle cop on the right shoulder standing there with the radar gun pointed at me. I immediately hit the brakes and pulled onto the shoulder right in front of the bike where he was pointing. The fact that he didn't even have to saddle up must have helped, because I got off with a license and insurance check and a verbal warning that 80+ was too fast for that stretch of road.
