Time to trade in your 1911s?

A 1911 will run a wider variety of loads than most other pistols. A lot of the stuff that I handload will cycle fine in my 1911 and stove pipe in my glock. If you are using full power or plus p loads I have found that both work well. IMO a 1911 is a natural pointer, and is not the piece of junk that everyone thinks they are. I also do not have a problem with a glock, once I got the grip angle down I was shooting them accurately as well. I would trust my life to either platform.

So now the question is: Did you run all of those 10,800 rounds through the same gun? When you say you ran x number of rounds through 1911's, it makes me think there may have been more than one 1911.

Two. My primary and secondary carry 1911's, which are a pair of identically set up Les Baer's. Round count was approximately 70/30 between the primary and secondary. I shot more than that, but I only log rounds fired in actual training environments and don't count plinking/casual shooting.

A quality 1911 that I want to trust as a carry gun would cost three to five thousand dollars because this is a gun that a true craftsman needs to assemble. A "gunsmith who knows how to put a 1911 together" doesn't cut it.

Agreed, and a big reason why 1911's aren't a great choice for everyone.

A glock, by comparison, can be had for an average of 500 bucks and comes from the factory ready to take a beating.

Also agreed. The guns I keep in my truck, go bag, and get home bag are all Glock 19's for that reason. Somebody breaks in my truck and steals a Glock out of there I'll likely be more pissed about the broken window than the $500 gun.

The 1911 is an American classic and I love them. Do I believe modern designs and platforms are improved and more reliable? Yes I do. I carry a Glock.

I also believe .45 is an exceptional round. The reason I believe this is because of a conversation I had with an emergency room doctor with over 25 years experience in the ER. He told me that wounds received from a .45 almost always kill, even when shot placement isn't perfect. He said .45 ACP kills about double the amount of other rounds combined from his experience, which is extensive. And that is why he carries a .45.

I love my 1911's and carry one for EDC in cooler months.

I had no idea that you should change the recoil spring at a regular interval. Just replaced the recoil (and fp) spring in my RIA compact 1911 (after maybe 1,500 rds?) and she ran like a champ today at the range. I'm sure I had way too many rounds through her when she started to fail to return to battery.

She's probably the gun I shoot the most at the range. Like I said, prolly 1,500 rds thru 'er before a recoil spring change.

Trust my life to a RIA compact 1911.

Whole lotta hurt comin' out of the end of that barrel...

You should carry that Omega...or sell it to me so I can carry it. ;) ....... You know, because 1911's are antiquated and jam-o-matics. I wouldn't want you to have to worry about your gun jamming when you need it. After all, I read it on the internet so it must be true!

Guess I will put in my 2cents ;)
I agree with what was said in the article. I absolutely love 1911's and they are by far my favorite pistol to look at, show off and shoot! I have owned somewhere around 40 of them and the majority being higher end pistols. I have put thousands of rounds through them and will tell you all day long that I will carry and choose my Glock for duty/combat and hard use in training. You will never catch me bad mouthing a (most)1911's but if you look at what's on my hip you will see my Glock 19.
