What not to do when the engine is overheating.
Continue driving until extreme heat drops the seat out of the head.

No clue as to how this happened.
My only speculation is the engine overheard the driver saying how he's ok with some gun control laws for safety of children and greater good.
Then it decided to commit seppuku.
 
Someone not quite as talented as Nathaniel Brown Nathaniel Brown decided to overhaul his engine. Installed thrust bearings backward with oil groove facing the block.
Lasted 4k miles before the crankshaft spit it out. Ones with 270k of normal wear and tear on right for comparison.

If they paid good technicians to stay around in this industry, there would be a lot less of this going around.
Unfortunately, this is what most unsuspecting vehicle owners end up with as a result of an unappreciated line of work and cheap uneducated labor.

A good technician can make good money. If a tech can stay off their phone (talking and scrolling) , stay off drugs and alcohol, stay off a tool truck, stay off a toilet, stay off a woman (child support) they can pretty much name their price. Most I’ve seen leave left because they couldn’t keep up with technology or their body could not take it or one of the above reasons.
 
Most repairable engine failures don't come to me. Ones that suffered catastrophic failures do.
Don't get to see too many normal overheated engines, often melted and seized.

This one was bit painful, not the usual neglect and/ or abuse. Or end of service life.
2010 GX470 with 43k miles. Top end carbon removal service of some sort went horribly wrong. Liquid solvent filled intake plenum causing hydro lock. #3 rod exited the block, but not before destroying the head.

I dont know who drives these things. I pull over and check it over if the drivetrain doesn't sound EXACTLY like it always does. Some of these had to have sounded like a blacksmith's shop under the hood.

Debatable, I would consider what I was making a few years ago very good for
the time and industry. Our family just outgrew what the industry would allow for in terms of compensation. I agree that most techs fell into categories you mentioned, but the really good ones all end up in aviation, sales, etc.
 
I heard the new Yota engines aren't what they used to be, especially given the large recalls and engine replacements on the new Tundras. I want to like Toyota for the track record of building long-lasting vehicles but that whole debaucle tarnished them imo. Frankly, I really wanted to buy a new Tundra but engine issues and the fact they moved away from the 8-cyl scared me away.
 
The EPA fleet mandates around MPG are killing dependability all over.
Hard to fathom any of these small displacement turbo engines going 200k.

I have a 3.5 eco boost and I’m a little over 170k

No major issues yet and my wife’s 3.5 Navi is creeping up on 160k with no major issues. I’ve seen them go 250k~

Not too familiar with the turbo Toyotas but overall I’ve been pretty happy with performance, mpg, and longevity.
