Toyota engines...

I have a 3.5 eco boost and I’m a little over 170k

No major issues yet and my wife’s 3.5 Navi is creeping up on 160k with no major issues. I’ve seen them go 250k~

Not too familiar with the turbo Toyotas but overall I’ve been pretty happy with performance, mpg, and longevity.
Glad you're having good luck. I'll still gladly sacrifice a few mpg for a NA larger displacement engine. 200k+ on a 24 year old 5.3 and when I say zero drivetrain problems, I mean zero.
I bought the last V6 Tacoma because I didn't want the turbo 4s. All reports already suggest that was a good move.

Someone not quite as talented as Nathaniel Brown Nathaniel Brown decided to overhaul his engine. Installed thrust bearings backward with oil groove facing the block.
Lasted 4k miles before the crankshaft spit it out. Ones with 270k of normal wear and tear on right for comparison.

Customer states his 2019 Tacoma suffered mild overheating...

Don't inflate my ego. Mine still has plenty of time to grenade before I can blame something other than myself haha.

In about 2002 I bought a 96 4runner that had some front end damage
And the water pump cover was damaged, it had a overhead cam so the water pump is where the cam would be and driven by the cam belt but it has a cover that looks like a normal pump with the pulley and mount for the fan

This part was like $500 at the stealership and I couldn’t find a used one
Everywhere I called said they don’t sell parts off good engines
One junkyard finally said , well we sold an engine to a guy and he never brought back his old engine for a core refund . Here’s his number, maybe he still has it and will sell you some parts

It took me at least 50 phone calls to find a Toyota engine that didn’t run
And when I called the guy turned out he had let his girlfriend drive his 4runner and she had called and said the transmission or something felt broken.
She had somehow shifted it into 4 low and gotten on the interstate and blown a rod out the side of the block
lol at stealership.

Keep an eye on that front timing cover and the coolant pipe on the rear of the engine on the Tacoma. The coolant leak is hard to detect, the timing cover issue is easier to detect but pricey. Hopefully if they are gonna give you issues they do it under warranty. (I had a 2016 and 2020). Traded the 2020 when it left me stranded and started having various issues at 65K.

I dont know who drives these things. I pull over and check it over if the drivetrain doesn't sound EXACTLY like it always does. Some of these had to have sounded like a blacksmith's shop under the hood.

That's what boggles me. About 40% of core engines are driven to their death. I don't know how the sound and odor of last few minutes could be ignored...

I expect most men to be able to perform basic maintenance on their trucks. Willing and able to build a long block would be a plus. You've rebuilt and restored your Ford from front to back, kudos to you.👍

Not sure I'd rebuild my 1st gen Tacoma when the time comes. Likely yes, because it gets me next to a dead deer then brings me back home.

I've been telling friends and family to stay away from any newer Toyota with plastic valve cover(s). It's a dead give away for direct infect... eh, direct injection engine.

The reliability of some direct injection engines seem to diminish rather rapidly after 50k mark...

I sure appreciate the compliment. I wish I could say it's all been smooth sailing, but it threw a direct drive solenoid code today and left me with a bunch of neutrals. I installed the XDP modified solenoid. I imagine that's going to be the issue. I knew I should've just purchased the motorcraft part.....

Toyota North America covers every engine I assemble. All parts are Toyota OE or OEM, down to every gaskets and o-rings.

Your post had me looking at Hilux turbo diesel for my Tacoma... again...

I didn't think any Toyota engines were direct injection only.
