Thinking about driving cross country for a vacation. Looking for advise on travel planning. Places to go , places to avoid. Best scenic routes to travel ,things to carry. Will be traveling by van. Thinking about Georgia to Oregon. Loosely following the Oregon trail route.

Late last year we traveled from GA to OR/WA in our camper van.
Couple thing we done,
Million Dollar highway from Durango to Silverton Colorado.
Pikes Peak drove up and took the train.
Of course you could visit Yellowstone, Devils Tower, Mt Rushmore, Deadwood.
Monument Valley, Canyon Lands, Arches National Parks in Utah.
We've been to all of them on previous trips.

Also the train ride from Durango to Silverton is a great ride.

How we travel

Avoid Memphis, and I-40 as much as you can.
I-40 has become over packed with tractor trailers. You can travel 10-15 miles at a time at 60 or below because of semis riding side by side.
We have been going out west nearly every year since 2016. We have started using I-20 to about Abilene TX and then head north west.

If you are going to Yellowstone in Wyoming and get into firearms the Cody Museum Sheridan Ave in Cody and the range West Yellowstone Ave is a great treat. I love the wild animal sanctuary in Keenesburg Colorado
