Has anyone done this? Should I do it on my own or would anyone recommend someone they have dealt with? Was also thinking of going the archangel route, but not sure what mount to use for a scope. ty

Fun project! I started with an accurate mosin with an excellent bore, Rock Solid Industries scope mount and turned down bolt, timney trigger, archangel stock, cut & re-crown to SVD length (24.4"). Harris bipod, etc
I had a gunsmith do it to get it precise and to remove the rear sight
I would leave them alone if the stock is in good shape especially if the numbers match. If you come across a beater with no stock I'd say go for it. They'll be worth something one day
As the others have said, there going up in price everyday. I would leave them be. You can get a savage at wally world for 269$ plus savage is currently running an offer for a 60$ off, the offers good until the end of the month.
