Ultra lite advice

I use a BPS Crappie Maxxx shooter for shooting docks on Lanier and for use on back country hike in trout streams to shoot rocks and limbs....if I am doing basic pan fishing and stocker streams I use a BPS Johnny Morris special.

I have a St. Croix avid in a 6'3" UL Fantastic little rod. The problem with Ugly Stiks is that they are everything you don't want in an ultra light. You need a soft (not mushy) tip with a gradually stiffening spine. Sure you can tie an Ugly Stik in a knot, but you can tie a rope ina knot too,a nd I wouldn't fish with one. Ugly stiks are fine for bank fishermen that are more worried about catching a buzz than a fish (nothing wrong with that), but are not for the person serious about hooking up with fish. Do yourself a favor and look at the Premier series St. Croix (at least), or the G2 series GLoomis. You'll be damned glad you did. They are like holding sex.

You can pick up the St. Croix for roughly $30-40 over the Ugly stick, and have a very nice rod.

If you don't want to shell out the cash for the Premier, look for a Triumph. It's the same blank as the Premier, but it's built in Mexico using slightly cheaper components. They usually run in the $70 range compared to the Premiers that tend to run $100+.
