Do these online petitions ever do anything besides sign me up for more spam email?

Supposedly they will 'addressed' if they get to the 100,000 mark, although that was the last administration and usually 'addressed' just meant a link on a web page to a canned statement.

I was going to say 'they can't hurt', but if a petition fails and only gets a few thousand votes, that's hardly a groundswell of support for it. Hope that doesn't happen here...
