US civil war belt buckle authenticicty

I have a US civil war belt buckle that looks to be the real thing but how do I verify it? My brother gave it to me and he was not sure about it's origin either. He picked it up somewhere along the way buying/selling/trading years ago.

Any experts out there or sure way to check it out?
