Good article with good analogies. Too many people want to keep up with the Jones's than put something in the bank. Far too many people I know are one paycheck away from being in the hole. No savings, no plans for retirement, etc. But they have nice houses and cars, and the newest everything. People just aren't taught to save anymore.

To be fair though it is much harder to live in means today than it was back then. They don't even build affordable housing anymore. Vehicles are far more expensive. The system is designed to make people finance things. Why make money off a sale when you can make so much more from interest and finance charges? How difficult would it be to live in today's world without a car, internet, cell phone, etc? Pretty damn difficult. The price of education is even astronomical and extremely difficult to live without. The rot started long ago and it has invaded every aspect of our lives. Yes there are steps you can take but the whole system is set up to funnel you into its clutches.
