What are the point of dreams?

I've always thought dreams are your mind at play. Sorta like recess when you were in grade school.
I very rarely dream (or at least don't remember them) anymore. My wife has very vivid dreams and wakes me up sometime laughing in her sleep. She can often remember them in vivid detail.

Ok,I really like your explanation of what dreams are.. I think it's pretty spot on 😂 my mind is definitely at play at night time 😂 "Elvis has left the building"

A few weeks ago I decided to do 100 days sober. The last week or so I have had the craziest most vivid dreams that I can ever remember. Some of them make a lot of sense, some of them make none at all.

I dabbled in some of the ‘dream interpretation’ stuff back in the day.

Long story short, the brain invents parallel dreams that uses metaphors to mirror the issues that are concerning your life, and allow you to revisit and cope with stress, trauma, or unresolved feelings encountered during your waking hours.

Think of it as parts of your life made up into a story. Then a deranged lunatic takes apart the story and rewrites it using completely different characters and different artifacts to represent the objects pertinent to your story and it is replayed to you in your dream.

I had a really wild dream about swimming in a giant cylinder shaped pool that had really high edges and really icky moss covering every surface including the ladder. The dream was complete with a wicked sea hag with long slimey green hair.

When I talked out the dream out with someone they asked a couple questions. When they suggested that the pool represented my employment and what I was never going to touch, and the sea hag represented the bosses wife.

I know this doesn’t make much sense. But that lunatic rewrite was my dream and that bizarre analysis was just so completely right and correctly identified the position I was in.

I would have never drawn the parallel but it was SO TRUE.

I like this interpretation. Thanks for that perspective.
