Figure out your favorite varieties, ie ales, stouts, pilsners, etc and as suggested before get a sampler. Even better get yourself a ticket to a craft beer festival and try out dozens of great craft brews.
If you are venturing into the world of craft beer, steer clear of the "fake" craft beers or crafty beers as they are know like Blue Moon (owned by Miller).
Georgia has some great beers from Sweetwater, 3 Taverns, and Terrapin. Dogfish Head is a safe bet for a great beer as well.
Going from Michelob Ultra and Bud Light to a quality craft beer will be like a blind man being able to see for the first time. The flavors are intense, but that's a good thing. Give your palette a chance to adjust to the world of quality beers.
A good rule of thumb, if the beer needs a commercial with bikini clad babes to sell it--avoid it.
Be adventurous.

I carry a brand called Fat Cat Beer Co at the homebrew supply/craft beer shop I manage. It is a good transitional beer into craft beer. I work for Barley n Vine in Stock bridge if anyone is in the area.
as do most krogers as well. and most liquor stores do this too, as long as you go to a LS outside the "hood" anyhow.
