What happened to the turkey shoots?

Used to be this time of year turkey shoots where being put on everywhere. Churchs, civic groups and VFW's always had them but these days they seem to be few and far between.
When I was a little kid I used to think that everybody just shot the turkeys right then and there. Didn't seem very sporting to me .

My son and I have a tradition to go every year before Thanksgiving but they are getting much harder to find. Lots of churches around here sponsor them to finance their missions work but they don’t seem to advertise.....You almost need to hear about them from word of mouth or from one of their member’s Facebook page

These are from a couple weeks ago....they let the older shooters sit and shoot at this one, and it was held to raise money for their youth groups

And yep shootin4fun shootin4fun is right we were blessed to win three huge turkeys with my old Remington 1100 and donated them to needy families

They still have one at the church across from Charlie's store on hwy 166, at the Douglas/Fulton line, on the Fulton side of the river. That one has been around as far back as I can remember. I've shot that one many times, but haven't done it in a couple years.

They had a turkey shoot at the Elk lodge in Cartersville last week. A friend of mine took his 11 year old daughter and she won a turkey. She is now hooked on shooting and wants a 20 gauge for Christmas!

Turkey shoots are fun.

Everyone needs to start posting where and when the shoots are.

They have it every year. My friend who attended got started on shooting shotguns a few years ago because of that turkey shoot. Looks like his daughter will do the same. I've only attended that shoot once, about 3 years ago, and it was very well done. Lots of real good guys. They hold the shoot out in the field, next to the river.

The last one I went to several years was more of a long barreled shotty show. It seemed the longer the barrel and tighter the choke the more shot in the bullseye.
Then someone shouted here comes Long John, well seems a john had actually stick welded a 3 ft. long pc of, I believe, 3'4 sch. 40 pipe. All bets were on john for his debut
His turn came and he stepped up to the line, took a shell from the "safety" officer, loaded that single shot, welded long gun, I stepped back to put a few bodies between me and that crappy looking weld.
John aims, almost touching the darn target, and squeezed the shot off, barrel and all. The weld pulled loose, like a small claymore, the weld and some pipe and barrel blew out, luckily over the crowd and 1 pc into John's left shoulder.
The pipe, or most of it, stuck into the target stand like a stake through a Vampires heart.
I checked out and bandaged John's shoulder nick, had a few words with the safety guy and left, not even shooting my turn, there was way too many bubba's with their tricked out long shotty's, honey or STP induced shells, barrel ends heated and squeezed tighter than a 16 gage, for me to hang around and be implanted with even more metal than several Ortho surgeons had already implanted in me.
True story, happened in south Ga., about 15 years ago.
